Director & Principal Investigator

Dr. Cruz’s research is driven by curiosity about how the built environment can help us better understand human mobility and function. She enjoys bringing together ideas across disciplines and exploring how civil engineering can contribute to meaningful challenges in human health, independence, and quality of life. As a mentor, she values curiosity, collaboration, and creating an environment where students are encouraged to explore ambitious ideas and grow into independent researchers.

Outside the lab, Dr. Cruz can usually be found exploring new places, drinking more coffee than necessary, or thinking about research when she is supposed to be doing neither.

Marco earned his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Universidad José Cecilio del Valle (UJCV) in Honduras. Before joining UCF, he gained professional experience in structural design, applied geotechnics, infrastructure project management, and site supervision. His research interests include structural health monitoring and floor vibration sensing for intelligent built environments, as well as human–structure interaction. He is also interested in soil–structure interaction and foundation engineering, particularly the behavior of retaining and foundation systems under static and seismic loading and the assessment of settlement in heterogeneous soils.
